17th PRRES Conference 2011, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia

The 17th Pacific Rim Real Estate Society Conference, to be held from Sunday 16th to Wednesday 19th January, 2011 is proudly hosted by Bond University Mirvac School of Sustainable Development and supported by Queensland University of Technology and University of the Sunshine Coast, and includes Australian and International speakers at the forefront of property research, education, practice and policy making. Papers on a wide ranging number of property topics, disciplines and research areas will be presented under the conference theme of Climate Change and Property: its impact now and later.  Early bird registrations are now available before the 29th November.

The PRRES Achievement Award

The Pacific Rim Real Estate Society Achievement Award is to acknowledge outstanding achievements in property education, property research and professional practice by a member of PRRES. The award is made every two years, assuming a qualified candidate is nominated.  

The recipient of the PRRES Achievement Award is determined by an Awards Committee drawn from the PRRES Board.  

Nominations for the PRRES Achievement Award should be in the form of a letter which clearly makes the case for the person being nominated. A brief and current curriculum vitae/resume of the person being nominated should accompany the nomination. A person may not nominate him/herself.  

Both the nominee and the person nominating must be financial members of PRRES. Members of the above Awards Committee are not eligible to be considered for the award.

International Real Estate Society

2011 Awards Nominations

International Real Estate Society 2011 Awards Call for Nominations Nominations are called for the following IRES Awards:

  1. IRES Achievement Award For outstanding achievement in real estate research, education and practice at the international level
  2. IRES Service Award For outstanding service to the International Real Estate Society and/or regional real estate societies
  3. IRES Corporate Excellence Award For outstanding corporate leadership at the international level

Nominations in the form of a detailed letter should be submitted, with any desired supporting documentation, clearly identifying achievements and why the nominee should receive the award. Nominations should be submitted no later than 29 April, 2011 by email to Paloma Taltavull, IRES Awards Committee Chairperson at

The awards will be determined by the 2011 IRES Awards Committee and will be presented at the AsRES Annual Meeting in July 2011.

News from PRRES Members

Deakin University

Property students at Deakin University will be travelling to Queensland in November 2010 to compete in a national RICS moot court challenge. The opposing team will be the winner of the Qld moot court between the University of Queensland and QUT. This event is sponsored by RICS and Nick Hudson is the contact at RICS if other universities are seeking to become involved next year. The Deakin University students are competing on their own accord although every student competed in an internal moot court earlier in 2010 following the RICS moot court guidelines within the unit ‘Statutory Valuation.

From 2011 a new external ‘Postgraduate Diploma in Property’ will be offered. This is Victoria’s first fully external property degree at the request of industry bodies and employers. The course uses innovative delivery methods including interactive lectures and high tech delivery methods.

As an experiment in 2010 the 1st year unit ‘Introduction to Property’ was offered in trimester 3. Without any form of promotion there were 70 students enrolled who were primarily studying commerce – there were no core property students. With the upcoming changes due to the Bradley report this may be an effective means of increasing exposure of property to other disciplines with a university which already has a property degree. It is hoped that a proportion of these students will convert completely to property or alternatively to the combined Property/Commerce degree.

Congratulations to John McDonagh who has been promoted to Associate Professor and welcome to Gary Garner from QUT who is starting at Lincoln University straight after PRRES 2011. Also congratulations to Sandy Bond who won the PINZ Academic Award for 2010. Well done Sandy!

University of South Australia

The inaugural UniSA Property ‘Career Spotting’ evening was held on 14 September, 2010. With 23 careers profiled by 27 practitioners to over 50 students, ‘Career Spotting’ provided over 350 three minute interactions between students and practitioners, allowing students to ask practitioners questions about potential careers. The ‘Career Spotting’ evening aimed to provide students with an opportunity to better understand alternative careers and to make a more informed career choice.

Participating practitioners included the General Manager of Delfin Lend Lease, the CEO of Toop & Toop, Centre Manager of the Myer Centre and representatives from ANZ, Woolworths and Aspen as well as all the major property firms including Colliers, Jones Lang LaSalle, CBRE and Knight Frank. The night was pronounced an outstanding success by students, practitioners and staff!
